Hot gifts driving 2013 holiday spending
Despite the slight dip in spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, the National Retail Federation is still predicting retailers will see $602.1 billion in sales this holiday shopping season. Some $57.4 billion is on the books from the initial four-day shopping event, leaving an estimated $577.4 billion still on its way to cash registers.
With customers having the bulk of their shopping yet to do, we ventured to Kimco’s Columbia Crossing center in Columbia, Md., and Suburban Square in Ardmore, Pa., to ask shoppers what gifts are motivating them to spend this holiday season. We heard products ranging from electronics to clothes to cooking supplies from shoppers of all ages. Take a look at what’s topping shopping lists this year.
But even after these shoppers go home with their wares, they will have good reason to return to Kimco centers throughout the holiday season. For instance, Suburban Square will be hosting a holiday event every Saturday in December for shoppers and families.
Mesa Riverview in Mesa, Ariz., is holding a winter-themed event on Dec. 7, where the first 100 kids will receive a free ticket to see Disney’s “Frozen.” Mesa Riverview will also provide real snow, family photos, prizes, balloon animals, and more.
These are just some of the gift-buying and events on customers’ radar this year. What are you seeing as some of the hottest products and shopping center events driving spending and foot traffic this year?
