Many owners and managers of commercial real estate, including Kimco, believe that sustainability and corporate responsibility initiatives are one way to drive long-term growth and value creation within the industry. But many questions and challenges remain about the strategies, policies, and resources required to enact change.

I was a recent guest on Howard Kline’s CRE Radio show that covered some of the latest viewpoints on the matter. Joining me were David Pogue, Global Director of Corporate Responsibility for CB Richard Ellis; and Dr. Constantine Kontokosta, Deputy Director for NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress.

We had an open and wide-ranging discussion that covered several questions, including:

  • What is a “sustainable” or “green” property?
  • Is sustainability still a growing trend in commercial real estate?
  • What do landlords and tenants have at stake when it comes to sustainability?
  • What type of data is available and needed to further sustainable construction and operating practices?
  • What role are cities and states playing in driving sustainable development in commercial real estate?
