Glynnes Pruett has been selling comic books with her dad at industry trade shows since she was six. They imagined having their own comic book store one day, and often talked about what it would be like, what they’d sell, and who would come enjoy their comics.

That childhood dream is now a reality for the 25-year-old comic book maven. Glynnes has brought a fresh face to the graphic novel world with last month’s opening of her new store, Comic Book Hideout, at Kimco’s Fullerton Town Center in Fullerton, Calif. Her grand opening celebration drove about 400 customers through her doors, doubling her sales goal for the day.

But Glynnes’s store opening is a milestone for another reason as well. She is one of the first Kimco KEYS tenants to open shop. Kimco KEYS is the business incubator program we launched in May 2012 to help entrepreneurs start their own business. The program places qualified applicants into participating Kimco shopping centers and provides one year of free rent and additional benefits. (You can read details on our Kimco KEYS web page.)

We spoke to Glynnes recently about what it feels like to open her dream business, the “indie weirdness” — as she calls it — that differentiates her shop from other comic retailers, and her goals for the coming years. She also told us about the role the KEYS program is playing for Comic Book Hideout, providing what she terms a “safety net” during her crucial startup years
